What is a graphene battery?

A graphene battery is a battery developed by Nanotek Instruments in Ohio, USA, that exploits the rapid and massive shuttle motion of lithium ions between the graphene surface and electrodes.

What is the development prospect of graphene batteries?

The success of the new graphene battery experimental stage will undoubtedly become a new development point for the battery industry. Battery technology is the biggest threshold for the vigorous promotion and development of electric vehicles, and the battery industry is in a stage where the development of lead-acid batteries and traditional lithium batteries is at a bottleneck. The battery industry and even the electric vehicle industry have brought new changes.

Due to its unique properties, graphene has been called a "wonder material" and scientists have even predicted that it will "revolutionize the 21st century". Professor Colin Bailey, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, said: "Graphene has the potential to revolutionise a huge variety of applications, from smartphones and ultra-fast broadband to drug delivery and computer chips."

Recently, researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles have developed a graphene-based micro supercapacitor, which is not only small in size, but also charges 1,000 times faster than ordinary batteries. It can charge mobile phones and even cars in seconds. At the same time, it can be used to manufacture smaller devices.

What is the principle of graphene battery?

An experiment in which graphene batteries recharge themselves using ambient heat.

The experiment made a circuit that contained LEDs, connected to ribbons of graphene with wires. They just put the graphene in a copper chloride solution and observed it. The LED lights are on. In fact, they need 6 graphene circuits, in series, to generate the required 2V to light up the LED lights, and to get this picture.

What happens here is that the copper ions have a double positive charge and travel through the solution at about 300 meters per second because of the thermal energy of the solution at room temperature, Zihan Xu and colleagues say. When the ions slam into the graphene ribbons, the collisions generate enough energy to cause electrons that are not in situ to leave the graphene. The electrons have two options: they can leave the graphene ribbon and bond with copper ions, or they can pass through the graphene and enter the circuit.

It turns out that the flowing electrons are faster in graphene than it can travel through the solution, so the electrons will naturally choose a path, traversing the circuit. It's this that lights up the LED lights. "The electrons released are more inclined to pass through the graphene surface rather than into the electrolyte. That's how the device generates voltage," Xu Zihan said.

What is the application of graphene battery?

Due to its high electrical conductivity, high strength, ultra-thinness and other characteristics, the application advantages of graphene in the aerospace and military industry are also extremely prominent. Not long ago, NASA developed a graphene sensor for aerospace applications, which can detect trace elements in the Earth's upper atmosphere and structural defects on spacecraft. Graphene will also play a more important role in potential applications such as ultra-light aircraft materials.
