Unlike the metallic lead from which it gets its name, natural and crystalline graphite is not used in pure form for structural materials due to its shear planes, low strength and brittleness. However, it has the properties of a good electrical conductor due to the large number of electrons that are delocalized between the carbon layers (a property called aromaticity). This leads to the use of graphite in arc lamp electrodes.
Other uses include the manufacture of pencils, which were originally made from English natural graphite and later a mix of powdered graphite with clay, known as plumbago. It is sometimes used as a lubricant, but this has limitations, such as promoting pitting corrosion in some stainless steels and galvanic corrosion between dissimilar metals, such as aluminium and copper. A better high-temperature lubricant is hexagonal boron nitride, which has the same molecular structure as graphite.
Graphite One is developing the Graphite Creek project in Alaska, a new graphite production facility that will transform the Company from an exploration company to a vertically integrated graphite producer and material manufacturer. The Graphite Creek project has a NI 43-101 compliant base-case inferred resource estimate of 107.2 million tonnes grading 5.78% Cg containing 6.2 million tonnes in situ graphite.
