The electric vehicle (EV) market is generating strong demand for graphite anodes. These anodes are used in Lithium-Ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage applications. These batteries are designed to last for years and require high quality anode materials to function at their best.

Increasing customer demands are driving the need for new, more geographically diversified and environmentally sustainable sources of high quality supply. As such, graphite anode manufacturers are pursuing the development of new anode materials that can meet the needs of EV battery users and ensure long-term supply security to a wide range of global EV producers.

Talnode-Si is a unique graphite and silicon-based anode material that boosts battery energy capacity when blended into standard commercial graphite anodes. This enables increased coulombic efficiency in first cycle cycles, reducing cell cost and delivering longer battery life.

In addition to Talnode-Si, Group 14 Technologies has also developed a carbonized silicon-carbon composite that displaces up to 50% of graphite in EV anodes. This technology is being tested by a global Tier-1 EV manufacturer and demonstrates an energy capacity of 1,800mAh/g compared to 360mAh/g for standard commercial graphite anodes.

With the rise in demand for lithium-ion batteries from e-mobility and energy storage markets, graphite anode manufacturers are seeking to develop a variety of new anode materials that can meet rising customer requirements and drive competitive pricing strategies. These include blending graphene with synthetic graphite or using carbonized laser-structured electrodes.
