Do you know artificial graphite?

Artificial graphite is fabricated by heat treatment of petroleum coke, coal-tar pitch, or oil. Specific capacity and reversibility is lost at high temperatures from 1000 Ah kg−1 (at 500°C) to 150 Ah kg−1 (1800°C). Above 2000°C, an increasing degree of graphitization improves capacity again (200–300 Ah kg−1) and minimizes irreversible charge.
Artificial graphite is similar to polycrystals in crystallography. There are many kinds of artificial graphite and different production processes. In a broad sense, all graphite materials obtained by carbonization of organic matters and treated by high temperature after being treated with graphite can be collectively referred to as artificial graphite, such as carbon (graphite) fibers, pyrolytic carbon (graphite), and foam graphite.
In the narrow sense, artificial graphite usually refers to the massive solid materials prepared by batching, kneading, forming, carbonization (called roasting in industry) and graphitization with carbonaceous raw materials with low impurity content (petroleum coke, asphalt coke, etc.) as aggregate and coal asphalt as binder, such as graphite electrode, isostatic pressure graphite, etc.
The crystal development degree of artificial graphite depends on raw materials and heat treatment temperature. Generally speaking, the higher the heat treatment temperature, the higher the graphitization degree. At present, the graphitization degree of artificial graphite produced in industry is usually less than 90%.

How to make artificial graphite?

There are many ways to make artificial graphite. The common way is to use powdery high-quality calcined petroleum coke as the main raw material, add asphalt as the binder, and then add a small amount of other auxiliary materials. After all kinds of raw materials are combined, they are pressed into shape, and then treated at 2500 ~ 3000 ℃ in a non oxidizing atmosphere to graphitize.
