Graphite lubricants

Dry lubricants or solid lubricants are materials that, despite being in a solid phase, can reduce friction between two surfaces that slide against each other without the need for a liquid oil medium.

The two main dry lubricants are graphite and molybdenum disulfide. They provide lubrication at temperatures higher than liquid and oil-based lubricants. Dry lubricants are commonly used in applications such as locks or dry lubricated bearings. These materials operate at temperatures up to 350 °C (662 °F) in oxidizing environments and even higher in reducing/non-oxidizing environments (molybdenum disulfide up to 1100 °C, 2012 °F). The low friction properties of most dry lubricants are attributed to the layered structure at the molecular level with weak interlayer bonding. Such layers are able to slide relative to each other with minimal applied force, giving them low friction properties.

What are graphite lubricants used for?

As an additive of grease, graphite can effectively improve compressive and wear resistance, and is especially suitable for the lubrication of mechanical equipment and high-load railway wheels and rails. Therefore, graphite is often mixed with high-viscosity mineral oils to synthesize greases.

How do you remove graphite lubricant?

1.Vacuum with the crevice tool of the vacuum cleaner to remove soot. If all or most of the soot has not been removed, call a professional cleaner. If vacuuming has removed all particles, go to the next step to remove any traces.

2.Blot dry with a white paper towel or scrape off as much foreign material as possible with a dull knife.

3.Apply rubbing alcohol to a clean white cloth, paper towel, or cotton ball. If the stain is deep into the fluff, use a blotting motion until the stain is removed or no color is transferred to the cloth. Do not let the alcohol penetrate into the backing as this will break the latex bond. If the spots are only on the surface, rub in one direction at a time. Never use circular motions to remove spots as this may ruin the texture. Stop if the spot is removed. If not, continue to the next step.

4.Apply a small amount of the cleanser solution to the area. (To make the detergent solution mix 1/4 teaspoon of lanolin- or bleach-free hand dishwashing detergent with 1 quart of water) Apply the detergent to the detergent-affected area using a blotting motion. If you want to remove the stain, keep using the cleaner solution and blot with a white paper towel until the stain is removed.

5.Rinse with tap water using a spray bottle and blot to remove excess moisture.

6.Spray lightly with water, this time without smudging; apply paper towel pads and bricks and allow to dry.

7.If there is still some stain on the carpet and the blotting won't remove it, moisten the tuft on the stained area with 3% hydrogen peroxide. Let stand (1) hour. Blot and repeat until the carpet is free of stains. Light causes the peroxide to turn back into water, so no need to rinse.

8.Apply a paper towel pad and press down with a brick.
