Comparison Between Copper Electrode and Graphite Electrode

Both graphite and copper are electrically conductive and can be used as electrodes. what's the difference between them as electrodes? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

1.From the point of view of material characteristics: copper as the electrode to use impurities free electrolytic copper forging best. Graphite as an electrode requires its fine particles and high purity.

2.In the state of finishing, the electrode loss of copper is small, and the processed surface can reach Ra≤0.1 micron, which is suitable for mirror processing. If there are lines on the surface, the texture produced by copper processing is relatively uniform. However, the electrode loss of graphite is too high to produce a mirror.

3.Under rough machining condition, the advantages of graphite are obvious. Graphite rough processing speed, good permeability; Electrode loss is also very small, suitable for large cavity processing.

4.Mechanical processing performance: the mechanical processing performance of copper is poor, and fine grinding is difficult; It is easy to deform and difficult to grind. Its advantage, however, is that it is easy to form. In contrast, graphite has good mechanical properties and is easy to form and modify.

When some thin and deep bone electrodes are made, they do not deform. Can withstand high temperature without deformation;

Of course, graphite also has disadvantages: high-speed machine to process, brittle and hard, easy to wear tools, with special graphite knife; Easy to collapse mouth, dust, easy to fall off, easy to deposit carbon, slag, pay attention to the protection of machine guide.

5.When it is used as an electrolytic cell, when it is connected to the anode, it will lose electrons and become a +2 valence. When it is connected to the cathode, it will not change.

As a galvanic cell, the reaction with the electrolyte and the other electrode must be considered. For example, when copper and iron are electrodes, when concentrated nitric acid is electrolyte, copper is negative and iron is positive (passivation). When dilute sulfuric acid is electrolyte, copper is positive and iron is negative. But for graphite, neither the galvanic cell nor the electrolytic cell, the graphite electrode participates in the reaction.

6.Copper electrode waste can be recycled, graphite is not.

7.Copper electrode copper may participate in the battery reaction, graphite electrode will not.

8.Graphite is cheap, while copper electrodes are durable but expensive.
