(How to develop artificial graphite using natural graphite as raw material?)
Drawing on the preparation process of artificial graphite to develop new graphite products is no longer a new topic in the artificial graphite industry. There are many carbon graphite products prepared by artificial graphite production process using natural graphite as the main raw material or auxiliary raw material, and some have even formed a large industry.
Zinc-manganese battery charcoal rods: Zinc-manganese battery (commonly known as a dry cell) charcoal rods are produced with natural microcrystalline graphite and coal pitch as the main raw materials, through the process of mixing and kneading, extrusion, roasting, machining, wax dipping, and other processes.
It mainly uses the high conductivity and low price of natural microcrystalline graphite, and does not require high ash content, but has stricter requirements on the content of impurities such as iron and sulfur.
Natural graphite brushes: Motor brushes are produced by using natural flake graphite and coal tar pitch as the main raw materials, through kneading, rolling, grinding, molding, roasting (graphitization if necessary), and machining.
It mainly utilizes the characteristics of high conductivity and high orientation of natural flake graphite. It requires that the content of impurities such as iron and sulfur is low and the ash content is not higher than 2%. Attention should be paid to the orientation of flake graphite during machining.
Carbon-graphite materials for machinery: The block materials produced by the processes of kneading, flakes, grinding, molding, roasting, ens. with natural graphite and coal pitch as the main raw materials, need to be precisely machined according to the requirements of use.
It mainly uses the lubricity, high-temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance of natural graphite, and has high requirements for ash and impurity content.
It can be seen from the above examples that compared with artificial graphite in the narrow sense, the carbon graphite products prepared according to the artificial graphite production process with natural graphite as the main raw material or auxiliary raw material have the following differences in the production process and product performance:
(1) The former usually need to undergo graphitization treatment above 2500 °C to obtain the required physical and chemical properties, while the latter can be graphitized or not.
To reduce production costs, graphitization is usually not performed, so there is a "carbon" phase converted from binder pitch in its structure.
This carbon, which is located around the graphite particles and binds the graphite particles together, has a higher hardness and a much lower electrical conductivity than natural graphite, so it has a greater impact on the performance of the product.
(2) Since natural graphite usually exists in the form of powder and has poor binding force with coal pitch, carbon graphite products prepared from natural graphite usually have large porosity, low mechanical strength, oxidation resistance, and heat resistance. Daarom, the product specifications cannot be too large, and the application field is also greatly restricted.
